ACE's Green Champion
The Green Idea
SPARK (Alberta Renewable Energy Co-operative), one of the founding members of ACE, started out as Alberta’s first member-owned retail power co-operative focused on green energy. It was an idea born from the aftermath of the great Albertan power deregulation experiment, fathered by a clear gap in the retail power choices available to Albertans, with few taking a real serious look at green energy options – until now. SPARK believed that they could do much better for conscientious Albertans by working together to take the role of power retailing into our own hands, and together, start moving the needle on how Alberta produces and consumes its power.
The Local Solution
SPARK lived up to their promise and goal by becoming the only wholly member owned provider of local, Made-in-Alberta renewable energy. They developed the SPARK Green Offset Program which now provides ACE customers with the opportunity to purchase locally generated Green Energy Offsets from small generators in Alberta. SPARK’s Green Offset Program cuts through the red tape and regulatory barriers, and lets customers support renewable energy generators of their choice. ACE’s Green Power Rate customers can support a local wind farm, bio-fuel project, a group of solar/wind micro-generators in their community or a solar installation on a local school. SPARK Green Generators are paid more than anyone else in the market because SPARK believes that micro-generators in Alberta deserve fair compensation for investing in their own systems and for supplying clean green energy into our province's power grid. Over the last two years of the program, thousands of dollars have been directed to Alberta-based micro-generators through the SPARK Green Offset Program.
SPARK is also currently a supporting partner for Western Canada’s largest co-operatively owned solar farm by Alberta Solar Co-op.

SPARK provides ACE customers with the opportunity to become a member of their renewable energy co-operative. As a member-owner of SPARK, you will have direct involvement in SPARK as well as indirect involvement in ACE via the SPARK board of directors.
You don’t have to be SPARK member, but why wouldn’t you?
Here are some of the perks of becoming a member-owner of SPARK:
- Exclusive discounts on ACE electricity and gas
- Look inside the hood and participate in how SPARK operates on the inside - Annual review and financial statements are presented at our Annual General Meeting (usually in the late spring) and we promise that you won’t see any million dollar executive salaries here!
- 70% of our yearly profits will be reinvested in renewable energy projects, and you can help decide how that is directed
- You’ll be entitled to a piece of our annual profits of SPARK
- The right to vote at our Annual General Meeting, elect your board of directors, or run for the board yourself
You decide on your level of involvement. You can simply pay your bills as you always have, knowing that you are enjoying some of the more competitive rates of electricity in the province and that you are contributing to an investment pool that is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta. Or, you can get more involved, get your family and friends interested, lead a push for an investment idea, or run for the board of directors. Your level of engagement is up you. Talk about democracy!
Even more good news? It only takes TWO minutes to sign up as a member! Your membership share costs only $25 and is completely refundable should you decide to no longer be a SPARK member.

- Members wishing to terminate membership in the co-operative must do so in writing to the Board of the co-operative. Upon termination of membership, the co-operative will reimburse the full membership share.
